Happy Birthday to the Handsome One!

The Handsomest Man in Rock and Roll, Baby!

Happy Birthday to HDM!! Here’s proof that “The Handsomest Man in Rock and Roll” was not just an empty boast. Be still, my heart.

Guitarmania — January 16, 1981

guitarmania

Can you imagine how great this might have been? When two guitar monsters face off, declare “we don’t need no stinking vocal mics” and rip through instrumental versions of “Rambling Rose” or “Science Gone Too Far?” Maybe they trade off on the long instrumental break that used to be the prelude to “Two Tub Man,” or dust off “Interstellar Overdrive.”

It could have been a gig for the ages. Unfortunately, Reality kicked Imagination’s a** yet again, and it was merely your garden variety rent party. Brother Wayne had just left Gang War, and was in dire straits financially, allegedly reduced to sleeping in abandoned cars on the LES. Ross had just left Shakin’ Street, and the Dictators reunion, which had kicked off the previous November, was on hold for another few weeks until Richie Teeter cleared his calendar.

RTB’s recollections of the night were succinct —  “Wayne did most of the singing. We did some MC5, some reggae.”

Plan 2012 a Success!

1B921865

Leader: “Ah, Agents K and S. Report on your plan for Dictators World Domination. As I recall, 2011 and 2010 were very quiet. Was 2012 more of a success?”

Agent K: “Yes, Leader, in previous years, the stupid, stupid humans were resistant to our message, and activity was limited. But we consider 2012 to be one of the best years in many, and it promises future success, which will affect us in the future.”

Leader: “Elaborate.”

Agent S: “2012 saw the formation of the band Manitoba, which brought the loud message to people of the Northeast, Canada and Spain, and which will surely continue to spread the gospel of Faster and Louder. They will ring out 2012 with a huge show at the Bowery Electric on Dec. 31.”

Leader: “Excellent. Is there more?”

We Got Your Humbug Right Here!

Had enough of being force-fed the same 10 Christmas songs everywhere you go? Here’s the perfect antidote, a cleansing for your musical palate. Add it to your mix CD for Xmas Eve with the family, and odds are good that “go tell the elves to f*ck themselves” will induce the Xmas lovers to shoot eggnog out of their noses.

Three Years and Running!

guitar-cake

This here blog has just celebrated its third birthday. Like all 3-year-olds, it’s full of poop and nonsense, and is equal parts hilarity, incoherence and PITA. But we’re proud of our little monster, and we thank you for continuing to make us your #1 stop for all your Dictators news.

Gigs by the Galore!

kempner-shernoff
After a quiet couple of months in terms of opportunities to see our guys, we suddenly have an embarrassment of shows, starting this week.

The Del Lords have an all too rare NYC show tomorrow, 12/11, at the Rock Shop, a benefit for Mark Spencer, whose recording studio was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. Ticket info can be found here.

Scott’s in the middle of an East Coast solo tour with Elliott Murphy, the highlight of which in our POV is a gig this Friday, 12/14, at the Record Collector in Bordentown, NJ, where he shares the bill with Andy Shernoff. That’s two Dictators for the price of one, a sure-fire value in these difficult times. Tix for the Record Collector gig are available here.

Daniel Rey has 3 gigs backing Ronnie Spector’s “Best Christmas Party Ever!,” starting this Friday at BB King’s, and ending Saturday, 12/22, at the Wolf Den at Mohegan Sun. Your humble reporter will be in attendance for that one.

Finally, what better way can there be to ring in the New Year than to share the mishegas with Manitoba at the Bowery Electric? Tickets are going faster than free hotcakes, but are still available here.

‘Coal for Christmas’

JP “Thunderbolt” Patterson’s brand-spanking new holiday tune, “Coal for Christmas,” is ready to drop. It will be available as a free download at Drugfrontrecords.com starting on Tuesday, Nov. 27.

We got a sneak preview of the song during a recent visit. It’s a witty tune, anchored by toy piano and sleigh bells, full of great quotes such as “working hard on my business, with St. Nick as my witness.” The intro is reminiscent of Run DMC’s “Christmas in Hollis,” and Dean Rispler’s solo channels the best of Robertson/Gorham.

Save a slot for the song in between the Kinks’ “Father Christmas” and the Reducers’ “I Ain’t Getting Nothing for Christmas.” It’s a welcome relief from the holiday horrors.
