“The Jules Whites?” Nah. “The Preston Blacks?” Nah.

On this day in 1982, the 4 prodigal sons of the Unholy Trinity of Hank Williams, Johnny Cash and Chuck Berry made their public debut with their first-ever show at Bottom’s Up in NYC.

They had spent months wood-shedding their sound, and after flirting with “Night Train” as a band name, settled on “The Del-Lords” in tribute to the director of The Three Stooges shorts. Who knew that 28 years later they would still be omitting the slow ones and hitting the fast ones?

Del-Lords

The set list from that first night:

1. Club Song
2. Paramour
3. Folsom Prison Blues
4. Joanne
5. Jumping in the Night
6. Bartender Blues
7. Love Among the Ruins
8. Hand to Mouth
9. Drug Deal
10. Double Life

Movie Review: ‘Jabberwalk’ — Brillig, It Twasn’t

Jabberwalk movie posterI love bad movies. Stupid story, bad acting, lack of continuity, zippers showing on the monster’s costume: To me, these are all assets, as long as the movie itself is entertaining. A good bad movie is much more enjoyable than a bad good movie.

On the surface, 1976’s “Jabberwalk,” AKA “This Is America,” an ITM (International Talent Marketing) production, has all the ingredients for a classic bad movie. The film is a series of vignettes about the American Way, with footage of NYC from its grimiest era, female wrassling (featuring the Fabulous Moolah), demolition derby, geriatric prostitution rings, junk food addictions, drive-in churches and other assorted weirdness. There’s plenty of nudity and explosions, and, most importantly, it has a few seconds of priceless footage of the Dictators circa 1975. This thing should rock, right? So how come it’s such a stinker???

Manitoba May Mayhem, 1987

On 5/15/87, Wild Kingdom (they hadn’t added the “Manitoba’s” yet) made their first real road trip into enemy territory and played Boston’s Rat. This was one of about 2,000 fantastic shows I saw in that magical toilet during my extended youth.

Finding these tremendous pictures at the Boston Rock and Roll Photography page in Facebook got me to waxing nostalgic about the gig. Thank you to Wayne Valdez for his kind permission to use these shots.

Love at First Listen

The Dictators Go Girl Crazy!Note: This is the second post in The DFFD Blog Goes Girl Crazy! special — a monthlong series commemorating the 35th anniversary of the release of ‘The Dictators Go Girl Crazy!’

Dateline: Suburban Boston, 1975.

It was my senior year of high school, I wasn’t quite 18, and I was still worshiping at the altars of Elton, the Beach Boys, and the Raspberries. I didn’t know any better, because there really wasn’t anything better to know about. What else was there for a kid from the ‘burbs? J Geils was great, but they were homegrown and played in town 10 times a year, so we took them for granted. I hated Zep, hated Bad Company, the Coop was in the bottle, Grand Funk was over the hill. It was a musical wasteland. So, I went searching, and started digging in the used stores for stuff I’d never heard of, and reading reviews of new acts. I saw this one review of a new band called the Dictators that used the phrase “Nazi surf band.” “That sounds pretty good,” thought I, and seeing that there was a wrestler on the cover sealed the deal. I needed this lp, and added it to my search list. The problem was it was nowhere to be found! I hit every store in town — nada. I’d do a sweep every week — zip. Boston was not hip to the Dictators!!

Happy National Grandmother’s Day!

Grandma ManitobaTo help celebrate National Grandmother’s Day, we present the Saga of Grandma’s Spatula.

“When I was 15 years old, my grandmother in upstate N.Y. used to watch me during the week whilst my parents worked in the city. One day, yours truly was f*cked up on Quaaludes, and I went up to my gram, who was BBQing burgers on the grill in front of our bungalow. I said, ‘Gram, you make them too well done, let me turn the burgers.’  She said, ‘Get away from me.’  I said, ‘Gram, you overcook them to death, they’re like hockey pucks when you’re done! I like them raw, let me turn the burgers!’  AGAIN she said, ‘Get away from me.’

“I grabbed for the spatula — she grabbed it back. A struggle ensued. Grandma — Manitoba. Grandma — Manitoba. The spatula went back and forth. I grabbed one last time, and GRANDMA WENT FLYING OVER ON HER ASS! The people in the other bungalows looked over, aghast, and said ‘Did you see what he did to his grandmother?’

“I stood over her triumphantly, spatula in hand, and as I looked at her lying on the ground I said, ‘Grandma, remember one thing. I am no mere mortal. I AM HDM, and I AM RIGHT!’”

Coming in March: The DFFD Blog Goes Girl Crazy!!

The Dictators Go Girl Crazy!

The month of March commemorates the 35th anniversary of the release of The Dictators Go Girl Crazy! We’re celebrating this sacred event with a monthlong series of posts. We’ll have personal stories, from the staff and also from respected guest writers, about hearing the album for the first time and the influence it has had. We’ll also have reviews and ads from BITD, trivia (did you know, that if you play “Back To Africa” backwards, you can hear Ross say “I buried Stu-Boy?”), and plenty of other foolishness. Be there or be square!

Review: Return to Connecticut

Andy at Cafe Nine

The Andy Shernoff road revue made a second visit to Café Nine in New Haven last night. The wet and foggy conditions made for a little smaller crowd, but what was lacking in numbers was more than made up for by the enthusiasm of the lucky few.

Andy was in fine form. Very relaxed and cracking jokes all night, we got to see a goofy side that’s usually hidden. “Haircut and Attitude” got new lyrics of both “hairstyle” and then “mullet and attitude!” “Weekend” made its acoustic debut, as did a previously unheard collaboration between Joey Ramone and Andy, called either “The Island Song” or “You Make Me Tremble.”

The next gig on the dance card will be Friday, March 12, at The Record Collector in Bordentown, N.J.

Last night’s song list:

New York, New York
Weekend
Master Race Rock
Find Something Beautiful
Baby Let’s Twist
Stay With Me
Haircut and Attitude
Chinese B***h
Stop Thinking About It
Who Will Save Rock and Roll
