11 Years Ago Today … We Wish YouTube Existed

Review by DFFD123
Another day, another birthday, another birthday show, another brief appearance by the Dictators. This time the birthday boy was East Village musician Tom Clark, a friend of the ‘Tators who opened for them at CBGBs a couple of years ago. The Dictators started their set, well, as Manitoba’s Wild Kingdom. In Top Ten’s absence, Ross, Andy, HDM and J.P. performed “The Party Starts Now” and “Had It Coming,” followed by “Sonic Reducer.” And Clark got the ultimate present when he was invited onstage to play rhythm guitar on “Baby, Let’s Twist,” “Stay With Me” and a rollicking version of “California Sun.”

Happy National Grandmother’s Day!

Grandma ManitobaTo help celebrate National Grandmother’s Day, we present the Saga of Grandma’s Spatula.

“When I was 15 years old, my grandmother in upstate N.Y. used to watch me during the week whilst my parents worked in the city. One day, yours truly was f*cked up on Quaaludes, and I went up to my gram, who was BBQing burgers on the grill in front of our bungalow. I said, ‘Gram, you make them too well done, let me turn the burgers.’  She said, ‘Get away from me.’  I said, ‘Gram, you overcook them to death, they’re like hockey pucks when you’re done! I like them raw, let me turn the burgers!’  AGAIN she said, ‘Get away from me.’

“I grabbed for the spatula — she grabbed it back. A struggle ensued. Grandma — Manitoba. Grandma — Manitoba. The spatula went back and forth. I grabbed one last time, and GRANDMA WENT FLYING OVER ON HER ASS! The people in the other bungalows looked over, aghast, and said ‘Did you see what he did to his grandmother?’

“I stood over her triumphantly, spatula in hand, and as I looked at her lying on the ground I said, ‘Grandma, remember one thing. I am no mere mortal. I AM HDM, and I AM RIGHT!’”

Manitoba Monday: Simply the Best

Start off your week in style, courtesy of the King of Men.

From a memorable, quote-filled (“How can you learn anything when you’re all talking?”) Dictators show 11 years ago this past weekend:

“Remember, I’m the best there is,
I’m the best there ever was,
and I’m the best there will ever be!!”

Doing the Manitoba with Red Fox Motel

Red Fox MotelIt’s the dance sensation that’s sweeping the nation. Our favorite trio of Walpole High students, CJ Romeo, Pat Maloney and Casey McGuill, continue to garner good press for their recent tribute song about the King of Men.

We had hoped to scoop the world and run their first-ever interview a couple of weeks ago, but had to postpone due to time constraints on the band — they had to study for mid-terms. Since then, the accolades have been rolling in, and they have aced this interview with the Walpole Times, which suspiciously asks almost the exact same template of questions we were going to ask! (I’m not saying they stole our material, but there was a power outage at DFFD headquarters, and Tyler, the guard dog, did wake up the next morning with the scent of chloroform and Liva Snaps on his breath. I’m just sayin’.)

The song is available on iTunes, and you can catch the band on the last Friday of every month at Newbury Comics on Route 1 in Norwood, Mass.

Here’s a clip of them doing their “smash hit single” at the store last Friday night.
