The spanking-new single from Holland’s the Works (www.theworksrock.nl) is a reworking of the ‘Tators/MWK classic “New York, New York.” In Dutch, “Mokum, Mokum” is a tribute to the Works’ hometown of Amsterdam (nickname “Mokum“). Hear it here: www.myspace.com/cheesetheworks. (Be sure to check out the lyrics, translated into English, at the end of this post.)
We at The DFFD Blog were impressed and intrigued, so we e-mailed some questions to the band’s singer, Marko ‘5 ft 7’ Petrovic:

For you this YouTube Tuesday, we take you back a couple of weeks to recall the shock and dismay surrounding the untimely passing of one of our heroes. In this touching tribute, Thunderbolt Patterson sings for Alex Chilton to kick off his performance with Dave Bone during last month’s SXSW festival in Austin, Texas. The sense of community catharsis is palpable, especially since Big Star had been scheduled to hit the stage at the fest later that week. As J.P. himself noted here at The DFFD Blog: “Many tears in the audience, which was the point; I got choked up myself while singing it.”

Note: This is the last in a series of posts in The DFFD Blog Goes Girl Crazy! special — a monthlong commemoration of the 35th anniversary of the release of ‘The Dictators Go Girl Crazy!’
For this last post in our March celebration of our favorite band’s seminal first LP, we’ll let a couple of actual Dictators have the final word:
Ross the Boss: That’s amazing, 35 years?? Well, I’m here in Germany tonite and thinking what a monumental album that turned out to be, no words can describe my pride!
J.P. “Thunderbolt” Patterson: In 1975 I had the only subscription to “Creem” magazine in my middle school. I took one look at the Dictators and remember saying to myself…”I wanna be in THAT band.” Gee, I wonder how that worked ? Jury out ?

Some reviews from Back in the Day, dug up by my esteemed colleague Salvi C.:
“The Dictators Go Girl Crazy may be the most self-indulgent, impossible, elitist, brilliant recording ever.” — Trouser Press
“This album is vulgar. But impressive.” — Creem
“You’ll go bozos for it!” — Dictators Fanzine #1

No matter what you think of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, you gotta be happy for Iggy and the Stooges (“Roll over, Woodstock!” “Come on, let’s get some rich ladies up here!”).
And you’re definitely gonna like this speech if you’re a Dictators fan — especially if you appreciate the eloquence of our own Top Ten.
